Translated during the Tang Dynasty by Shramana Bhagavat-dharma from west India.
Thus I have heard, once Sakyamuni Buddha was at Potalaka Mountain, in the treasure-adorned Way-place in Avalokitesvara's palace, sitting on a precious Lion-Throne adorned in purity with countless multifarious Mani-jewels. Hundreds of precious streamers and banners were hanging all around.
At that time, the Tathagata, who was sitting on his throne, intending to explain a teaching of the Total-Retention Dharani, was along with innumerable Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, whose names are: Dharani King Bodhisattva, Treasure King Bodhisattva, Bhaisajya-Raja(Medicine King) Bodhisattva, Bhaisajya-Samudgata(Medicine Superior) Bodhisattva, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, Maha-stamaprapta(Great Strength) Bodhisattva, Avatamsaka Bodhisattva, Great Sublime Bodhisattva, Precious Deposits Bodhisattva, Virtue Store Bodhisattva, Vajragarbha Bodhisattva, Akasagarbha(Space Store) Bodhisattva, Maitreya Bodhisattva, Samantabhadra(Universal Goodness) Bodhisattva, Manjusri Bodhisattva, and so on. Such Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas are all great Dharma-Princes who had been empowered through their crowns (Abhiseka).

Verse 84 •••• Great Compassion Mantra
大悲咒
84. 娑婆诃
suō pó hē。
觀世音菩薩現解分諸法相
Quan Yin Pusa
appearing as explaining the Dharma.
譯:「娑婆訶」於此為完結的意思。
suō pó hē means
completed.
意為本咒全篇終了,眾生如能誠心持誦,必能有大成就。
Means this
Mantra is now completed, if all living beings can recite and hold this Mantra
sincerely, will most definitedly be successful.
解說:此句是菩薩教人念念於道的真言。
Comment: This
is Buddha advising us to be diligent in our cultivation of this Dharma.
因為修道人若僅將眼耳鼻舌身修淨,
If practitioner
of this Dharma knows how to cleanse our eye, ear, nose, tongue and body,
而無法使意根斷除,仍然難以登達彼岸。
but unable to detached from the root of
desire/idea/wish/thought/intention/expectation, it would be difficult to arrive
at the other shore.
所謂:「諸惡莫作,眾善奉行,自淨其意,是諸佛教」,
Saying: “do not
cultivate the evil ways; must alwalys pursue the benevolent
and virtous attitude, from a pure and clean way of
thinking, this is the teaching of Buddhism.”
就是這個道理。
this is the reason.
菩薩要讓眾生了解,一切的根所產生的業,
Buddha wishes
living beings to understand, the root where every thing
is manufactured,
都是由於意念所生的影響,
is as a result of this 意念 idea/thought,
心意誠則一切事可成,心意不誠,則一切事必然都會失敗。
Everything can
become successful with sincere thought, without sincere thought, everything can
become a failure.
持誦本咒的眾生在唸誦到這裡時,應以最大的虔誠,
Those who practice
this Mantra, must cultivate with the highest devotion,
行善修道,以感謝菩薩的大慈大悲,
to carry out compassionate deeds, to be
thankful to the Great Compassion of Buddha,
渡化眾生脫離苦海的宏願。
for having this great wish to enable all
livings beings to leave this sea of suffering.
名曰大悲陀罗尼
This, then, is called the Great Compassion Dharani.
四十二手世间稀
四十二手世间稀
And, with the Forty-two Hands, is extremely rare in the
world.
善根广积方能遇
善根广积方能遇
Only those with massive good roots encounter these.
不修此法太可惜
What a shame it will be if we fail to cultivate this Dharma!不修此法太可惜
Verse 83 •••• Great Compassion Mantra
大悲咒
83. 跋陀耶
bá tuó yě。
觀世音菩薩現解貪受諸觸相
譯:「跋陀耶」為隨心圓滿。
意指身為一切痛苦的根本,修道人要斷滅身根觸塵。
解說:此句是菩薩慈悲,指點眾生速離迷途的真言。
身之為形,乃在使性有所託,如人性不覺,則身體即是皮囊,很快就會腐化。
所以,身之為用是用在修行人道、天道,不是用來貪圖享受。
但眾生不知,百計昧心,以致無法超脫。
這是世人的通病,所以菩薩特再顯現法相,渡化眾生了悟此身色相,不過是因緣和合而成,一旦緣散,則一切俱無。
因此,眾生應深深了解人世的昇沈苦樂都不過是過眼雲煙,實在不用太執著。
法界虚空天外天
This is a place beyond any place in space and the Dharma
Realm.
微尘剎海尽包含
微尘剎海尽包含
That contains seas of lands in number like motes of dust.
有缘无缘同化度
有缘无缘同化度
Those with and without affinities will all be taught and
saved.
信受奉行即圣贤
信受奉行即圣贤
Those who believe, accept, honor, and practice are saints
and sages.
Verse 82 •••• Great Compassion Mantra
大悲咒
82. 漫多囉
màn duō là。
觀世音菩薩現兜羅錦手相
譯:「漫多囉」意為修道人要斷滅舌根、味塵。
解說:此句是菩薩對修道人在斷除眼、耳、鼻三根之後,還要斷滅舌根的真言。
一般來說,舌根分兩方面:一是味慾,二是口舌。
美食人人愛好,但是美食也最傷身。
其次是口舌,意思是說人與人之間的是是非非都是由於口舌所引起。
菩薩認為人要是犯了兩舌的毛病,必然會產生妄言不實,搬弄是非,惡口傷人,言不及義的種種不良後果。
於是人與人之間即常生怨憎之心,終致不能和諧相處,惡業叢生。
菩薩為要眾生修道,所以先要眾生斷除舌根、味塵,方能得悟正覺。
持咒诵经专一心
Hold mantras and recite Sutras with a single mind.
感应道交土变金
感应道交土变金
When responses mesh with the Way, dirt can turn into gold.
菩萨慈悲水现月
菩萨慈悲水现月
Bodhisattvas’ compassion: like the moon shimmering in water.
众生觉悟离味根
众生觉悟离味根
Living beings’ awakening: freedom from the tongue and
flavors.
Verse 81 •••• Great Compassion Mantra
大悲咒
81. 唵.悉殿都
Ōng • xī diàn dū。
觀世音菩薩現開五輪指相
譯:「唵」是諸咒母;
「悉殿都」是修道的總樞紐。
意為修道要掃除鼻根香塵。
解說:此句是菩薩勸告世人要修道,先要能平心靜氣,呼吸調和,使自己漸漸精進,而入無思無慮的境界。
這是修道的最重要法門,因為心不和,氣必粗。
氣一粗則神不寧,神不寧則萬念俱出,萬念一出如何能悟到如來呢?
再者香味誘人,容易使人貪圖口慾,口慾一生,則心有雜念,雜念一生,魔陣即起,又如何能修行順利呢?
所以,眾生必須斷除鼻根、香塵的慾望,才能達到悟澈萬象,空靈不昧的境界。
這是修道的根本工夫,不可不注意做到。

Verse 80 •••• Great Compassion Mantra
大悲咒
80. 娑婆诃
suō pó hē。
觀世音菩薩現垂金色臂相
譯:「娑婆訶」於此承接前句,意為修道人需持斷耳根聲塵。
解說:此句意為修道斷除耳根,而後始得成就無上妙境的真言。
菩薩要眾生在滅除眼根之後,仍要滅耳根聲塵。
原因是:耳根不淨,則無法聞法證道,宋儒程子說:「人有秉彝,本乎天性,知誘勿化,遂亡其正。
故修道,閉息邪念,但存一片至誠,返觀返聽,處處返乎自然。
然後四大五蘊不待淨而自淨,不言空而自空,方得成為真空妙體」。
這些話就是說明修道貴乎息邪念存至誠,聲塵斷除,方能辨清邪正,否則靡靡之音,怪誕之論,均可使修道人淪入魔道而萬劫不復。
丝竹土革木石金
Silk and earth, bamboo and hide, wood,
stone and metal.
八音齐奏日日新
八音齐奏日日新
Make eight notes that combine into endless scores of music.
解了耳根闻自性
解了耳根闻自性
Freeing his ear organ, he heard his own nature.
天乐鸣空不动心
天乐鸣空不动心
Even heavenly melodies wafting through space will not move
his mind.
Verse 79 •••• Great Compassion Mantra
大悲咒
79. 烁皤囉夜
shuò pó là
yè。
觀世音菩薩現千葉金蓮相
譯:「爍皤囉夜」是說修道人欲成清淨法身,
“Shuo Po La Ye” refers to those who are cultivating tranquility
and purity,
先要掃除眼根、色塵。
Must first rid of the “root of the eyes” and “color’.
Comment “root of the eyes” – one of our six senses,
our visual sense, what we see with our eyes, what we perceive as beautiful and
ugly.
解說:此句是菩薩直指大道真傳,
Explaination: This verse is Buddha explaining the
true meaning of the Tao Cultivation,
並期修道者有門徑可尋,
Those who practice for a period of time must search/seek
for an access door,
不致誤入歧途的真言。
Not to mistakenly take the wrong route. That is the
true meaning.
所謂「門徑」,就是眾生在修道時要留修禪定,期能得出世之果。
The “access door”, means all who practices must
cultivate meditation for stabilization, will be successful to leave this world
of karma after a period of time of practice.
門徑概分六項:
The access door refers to six categories:
一是要有求脫之願;
The first is the desire to leave this world of karma
(meaning this world we are in):
二是要能積樂勝行(意為積聚功德);
The second is the method of accumulating ‘happiness’
to be better (meaning to accumulate Virtue & Merit):
三是使心善一體(意為常存善念);
The third is to develop compassion as ‘one body’
(meaning to always have compassion):
四是資師圓滿(意為得明師指點);
The fourth is to seek for the teacher to be fulfilled
(meaning to have a knowledgeable/clear teacher to provide instructions/direction):
五是所緣圓滿(意為心有正識);
The fifth is to have a full/perfect Karma (meaning
to have a true/pure inner self):
六是作意圓滿(意為時時警覺)。
The sixth is to carry the desire of
fullness/perfection (meaning to be aware/alert at all times):
這六門是為修道人所必須理解的,
This ‘six access door’ is a must for those who are
practicing,
只要真能了解其含意,
As long as one understand the meaning,
那麼修道人當可滅除眼根色塵,
Will enable one who cultivates to remove the “root
of the eyes” and “color”,
達到即性見定的境界,
To attain the stae/realm of ‘stable natural essence’,
而不會受外境的色相所惑。
Not to be affected by the confusion cause by external
environment coloration.
老曰五色使目盲
Laozi said, “Five colors blind the
eyes.”
观音解眼悟真常
观音解眼悟真常
Contemplating Sounds freed his eyes and awakened to the
Truth.
金叶宝莲毫光照
金叶宝莲毫光照
Upon a golden lotus he radiates rays of light.
本来面孔非爷娘
本来面孔非爷娘
Our original face does not come from our worldly family or
ancestors.
Verse 78 •••• Great Compassion Mantra
大悲咒
78. 婆嚧吉帝
pó lú jí dì。
觀世音菩薩現應化文殊師利菩薩相
Note:
Characters in Italics are inspirations arise from reading the verse, and not
translation of the verse itself.
譯:「婆羅吉帝」是說道法無窮,能修,則由清淨達於極樂。
Translate: “pó lú jí
dì” means the practice of dao
(righteousness) is endless, but practicable, and it is through cleansing that
we can get to the Elysium.
解說:此句是菩薩重申大道高深的真言。
Comment: This
verse is stressing the profoundness in the practice of dao
凡有生則有死,有成則有敗。
Whenever there
is life, death awaits; whenever there is success, there is failure (whenever
there is a beginning, there must be an end, and the end of a chapter always
marks the beginning of another)
但世人卻喜生而惡死,結果呢?
怕死還是不免一死。
However, all
living beings prefer only life, and disgust death, but death is still unavoidable.
(This is to tell us to accept the reality, of what had happened, and then only
we can see all the goods that await us)
所以,欲求長生,必須在死處求生,就是說自己須先將自己的欲心大死一番,方能了悟「生」真正的意義;
否則慾念不滅,苦海無邊,無法保持清淨,以致永淪苦海。
反之,若能淨心少慾,定靜修持,則將步入極樂世界,不受輪迴之苦。
Therefore, the
eternal life can only be found from deaths (again, whenever there is a
beginning, there must be an end, and the end of a chapter always marks the
beginning of another, it is a cycle!, until we are
able to get out of it through meditation or religious practice)
Therefore, we
must put all our greedful thoughts to death, and then
only we can realize the true meaning of life.
From there, then
only we can get to the Elysium, and free from the suffering of reincarnation
forever.
法王长子文殊尊
The eldest disciple of the Dharma King is the Venerable Manjushri.
慈心教化娑婆民
慈心教化娑婆民
Kindhearted, he transforms and teaches inhabitants of the Saha world.
同愿证得无量智
同愿证得无量智
With identical vows, they certify to infinite wisdom.
常寂光土万佛村
常寂光土万佛村
The Land of Stillness and Light is the village of ten
thousand Buddhas.
Verse 77 •••• Great Compassion Mantra
大悲咒
77. 南无阿利耶
nā mó ā lì yē。
觀世音菩薩現應化普賢菩薩相
譯:「南無」為皈依;
「阿利」為聖者;
「耶」為禮。
意為皈命頂禮聖者。
解說:這句是說修道,要忘我相,方能念頭不生,改過自新的真言。
參求佛法重在掃除內心的妄念,並能專心一致,念茲在茲。
如此,日長月久,智慧開通,則成道可期。
菩薩闡揚佛法,旨在示人以諸法無我,萬物皆空的道理,修道者若能修到此一極處,自然也就能諸念不起,萬象不生,進而能超然物外,不受因緣之苦。
但是要想到達此一境界,修道者必先要有禮敬聖者的心情,默持善念,貞定不移,並能忍辱持戒,勇猛精進,才能獲得無上正果。
化身普贤徧三千
Transforming and appearing as Universal Worthy who pervades
all worlds.
跏趺座上法无边
跏趺座上法无边
He is seated in full lotus and ready with boundless Dharmas.
百宝轮掌破地狱
百宝轮掌破地狱
His hundred-jeweled, wheeled palm smashes the hells.
阿弥陀佛住西天
阿弥陀佛住西天
Amitabha Buddha is the Venerable
Host of the Western Paradise.
Verse 76 •••• Great Compassion Mantra
大悲咒
76. 南无喝囉怛那.哆囉夜耶
nā mó hé
là dá nā • duō
là yè yē。
觀世音菩薩現應化虛空藏菩薩相
譯:
Interpretation:
「南無」為皈依;
“Nam
Mo” meaning to follow;
「喝囉怛那」為寶;
“He
La Da Na” meaning treasure;
「哆囉夜」為三;
“Duo
La Ye” meaning three;
「耶」為禮。
“Ye”
meaning respect/etiquette.
全句就是禮敬皈依三寶之意。
The
whole sentence means “Respectfully and courteously follows the three treasures”.
解說:菩薩重說此句的用意(與首句同),
Explaination:
The reason Buddha repeat these word (similar to the first verse),
在於說明修道有捷徑,
To
further illustrate the short cut of cultivation;
希望世人不要自誤,
Hopefully
not mistaken by humans;
及早認真修恃,
To immediatedly
cultivate with devotion;
並且再三叮嚀:
Furthermore
repeatitively urging;
誦本咒的人應致力於降伏身心,
The
ones reciting this sutra should devote one’s effort to subdue the body and
mind;
參悟生死的大事。
To
achieve enlightenment about the importance of life and death.
由於一般世人皈依佛法,
Due
to some people practicing the Dharma;
大多不能悟澈真如,
Mostly
not able to comprehend clearly the truth;
只知吃齋唸佛,打坐瞑思,
Only
knowing how to be a vegetarian and chant the mantra, meditation and clearing
the thoughts;
以為這就是證道修行。
Thinking
that it is the correct method of cultivation;
實際上,這種徒具形式的修行方式,
Actually,
this method of cultivation by devotees using the external appearance/form;
是不能到達極樂世界的。
Will
not be able to arrive at the “Land of Utmost Happiness”.
菩薩要渡眾生,
Buddha
wanted to ferry all living beings across;
主要是渡眾生的心,
The
most important is the inner self;
渡一顆以
To
ferry across using
禮敬「佛」、
To
respect Buddha;
禮敬「法」,
To
respect the Teaching;
而又禮敬「僧」
And
to respect the way of the Sangha;
的修行真心。
Cultivating
in a truthful manner.
只要修道人能將這三者融為一體,
To
be able to have this three as one body;
誠心禮敬學習,終必有成。
Sincerely
and respectfully studying will be successful at the end.
真空为体幻色用
With True Emptiness as his substance and
illusory form as his function.
观察世间救诸病
观察世间救诸病
He contemplates those in the world and saves them from
sickness.
随机感应难思议
随机感应难思议
The responses that happen are timely and hard to imagine.
我等盲痴当皈命
我等盲痴当皈命
We blind and dull ones should certainly take refuge.
Verse 75 •••• Great Compassion Mantra
大悲咒
75. 娑婆诃
suō pó hē。
觀世音菩薩現大迦葉尊者相
譯:「娑婆訶」於此是連接前句。
意為菩薩顯現大迦葉尊者法相,指引眾生修持。
解說:此句是菩薩發大慈悲,要普渡大千世界一切四生(胎生、卵生、濕生、化生),以及六道(地獄、餓鬼、畜生、阿修羅、人間、天上)悉得善利的真言。
大千世界的芸芸眾生原本痴迷,極易受到現實環境的引誘,而陷入苦海,遭受各種輪迴之苦。
菩薩為憐憫這些眾生,特別又顯現大迦葉菩薩,手攜念珠,以引渡眾生脫離黑暗之境。
我輩眾生應體念菩薩此一慈悲,把握機會,努力修持,以成正果。
礼而未礼修无修
Bowing without having bowed; practice with no concept of
practice.
空泯所空有何求
空泯所空有何求
Realizing even emptiness is empty, what is there to seek?
看破放下真自在
看破放下真自在
Seeing through it all and putting it down
is true freedom.
逍遥法界任悠游
逍遥法界任悠游
Roaming throughout the Dharma Realm we can do as we please.
